A message from the CEO
Welcome to the latest edition of the Painaustralia eNewsletter.
September was a big month for Painaustralia. We were delighted to add Australian Survivor sole winner, Hayley Leake, to our ranks of Pain Champions. Hayley drew on her knowledge as a pain researcher to display grit and strength to beat 23 other competitors to the title and we look forward to working with her to raise awareness about pain and its management.
September marked Pain Awareness Month and I am proud to say that this year’s campaign saw our greatest engagement with our consumers. During the month, Painaustralia released a series of educational materials including factsheets, blogs, online videos, and a webinar raising awareness of the reality of living with chronic pain. We also launched our website chatbot function to help consumers find what they need on our website with greater ease.
I would like to say thank you to our pain champions and all of the consumers and health professionals that provided quotes and videos sharing their thoughts and impact of chronic pain on their lives. And a big thanks to our members and supporters who shared, liked, and commented on different issues highlighted throughout the month.
This past month also saw the culmination of input from Painaustralia to various reviews as well as new opportunities to advocate for people living with chronic pain. Painaustralia has provided submissions to:
- the National Medicines Policy Review;
- the public consultation process for the Post-market Review of Opiate Dependence Treatment Program Medicines (ODTP PMR);
- the Australian Medical Research Future Fund Strategies and Priorities consultation; and
- the Opioid Analgesic Stewardship in Acute Pain Clinical Care Standard consultation.
Painaustralia National Patron, Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston AK, AFC (Ret’d), Chairman Duncan Lewis, CEO Carol Bennett and board directors meet with Pain Champions, Tara Moss, Peter Rudland, Sophie Scott and Hayley Leake.
Our board has been busy planning to maximise our impact now and into the future. Our new Strategic Plan 2021-24 is now available on our website provides an overview of key priorities. Our board also spent some time with our amazing Pain Champions discussing strategic opportunities.
As we welcome our newest member and partner, Soldier On to Painaustralia, we are preparing to work with them and our members and consumer networks to develop a submission to the Royal Commission into Defence Personnel and Veteran Suicide and we are reaching out to our collective networks for feedback on some key questions.
It is also timely to feature a guest piece from our sponsor, CEA Technologies who is working to support our defence and veterans’ communities, many of whom are living with chronic pain.
I hope you enjoy this edition of eNews.
