Getting the Right Care
If you are in pain and are seeking help, contact your GP or health professional to discuss your pain management options.
There are many aspects to pain management and different pathways to care. Modern pain care uses a ‘whole person’ approach that considers physical, social and psychological factors. It is the most effective way to reduce pain, improve function and mood and reduce disability.
It is important to find a supportive and understanding GP, as they will be your primary point of contact for your pain condition. In collaboration with you, your GP can develop a Management Plan. If you have associated mental health issues, you can also access help through a Mental Health Treatment Plan.
To help you talk to your GP about pain, use the NPS MedicineWise chronic pain communication tool. You can also use PainTrain – My Health Summary to upload your medical history and test results and communicate your pain journey with health professionals.
If your pain cannot be effectively managed by your GP, you may need to be referred to a specialist pain clinic that offers a multidisciplinary pain management program.
