PAINAUSTRALIA’S NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE
6 June 2022
Painaustralia is pleased to announce the appointment of former member of the ACT Legislative Assembly, Mrs Giulia Jones, as its new Chief Executive Officer.
Announcing her appointment on behalf of the Board, Painaustralia Chairman Duncan Lewis welcomed Mrs Jones, congratulated her on her appointment, and noted Mrs Jones joins Painaustralia after a long career in politics and communications.
Most recently Mrs Jones has served for nine years in the ACT Legislative Assembly, including time as the Deputy leader of the Opposition and Shadow Minister for Health, Mental Health, and Multicultural Affairs. Mrs Jones starts her new position today.
“Mrs Jones’ not only has a deep understanding of the health system, but a genuine empathy for people suffering from health-related issues. In politics she has earned a reputation as a determined advocate, striving to ensure governments provide the best health systems possible,” Mr Lewis said.
“The Board of Painaustralia is certain she will provide robust advocacy into the future for those consumers who live with chronic pain.”
"In health there are so many ailments that present challenges to people that it may come as a surprise to many to learn that one in five Australians live with long term pain,” Mrs Jones said.
"Understanding the pervasive effect pain is having on so many people in our community is difficult to grasp because so many people suffer in silence.
“It is obvious that people suffer physical pain on a wide variety of fronts, but we are only beginning to understand the impact mental pain can have on people, and how we need to address it.
“Pain is a medical condition in and of itself. I look forward to connecting with members of parliaments across the nation, with practitioners and medical experts, with academics and primarily with those living with pain as a constant companion, to see us as a society advance in helping and providing the best relief possible.
"I am honoured to take up the Chief Executive position with Painaustralia and assure people who’ve had their quality of life taken away by the insidious impact of long-term pain that I will take up your cause with determination and vigour.
“From the outset, I encourage the media to turn its attention to pain as a medical condition in its own right. Don’t hesitate the call me at any time.
“We need the community and government to look at pain in a new light—not just as a condition that is associated with other medical conditions--but a condition in and of itself.”
